Inyi is a town in Enugu State, Nigeria.

History

According to oral history, the forebearer Inyi himself was born in Agun'ese, near Umueji in Ufuma, Anambra State. This is why the Inyi n'ese Omire monuments became commonplace. Another interpretation however posits that in the 15th century, a settlement was noticed around the Mmamu, a river which attracted immigrants because of its domestic, economic and defensive use. Inyi is bordered by Achi, Awlaw, Akpugo, Ugwuoba (all in the Oji-River Local Government Area) and Ufuma in Anambra State.

Geography

Inyi comprises nine villages, namely: Umuome, Enugu-Inyi, Obune, Agbalidi, Amankwo, Umuagu, Nkwere, Alum and Akwu. Between 1976 and 1977, two secondary schools were built in Inyi by community effort and with approval from the State Ministry of Education, formerly Anambra. The schools are Boys High School Inyi (now known as Model Comprehensive Boys Secondary School) and Girls Secondary School Inyi. Today, there are many more secondary and tertiary Institutions in Inyi and prominent among them is the Federal Tertiary Institution (FTI) Inyi: A school of paramedical studies located in Enugu-Inyi.

Places of interest

The natural endowment of Inyi is amazing. Besides its centrality, fertile land, numerous streams and spring water, Inyi has the best clay deposit in Africa according to a report by the University of Nigeria. This clay deposit however attracted the construction of Inyi pottery industry by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

People

Inyi people are achievement-oriented. This spirit of enterprise has manifested in every area of human endeavor, particularly in science, religion, commerce and education. The traditional cassava menu, known as abacha, is served with dry fish and palm wine will always remain the people's delight.
